Nomsa, is one of the ladies that works at Ithemba (the place where I go to ministry most days) and she prepares chicken feet and heads for us to eat. I was some what excited just so I could say that I've eaten a chicken head before, but looking at my bowl of chicken parts just didn't look appetizing. We all sat around a table and I wasn't really sure what to do so I picked up my chicken foot and tried to nibble on it but there really wasn't any meat on it. Chicken feet and heads are the cheapest kind of meat you can buy here in Jeffrey's Bay so for a lot of people here, that's all they can afford. I licked the foot a little and tried a little piece of the skin but really, I was pretty much grossed out so I moved onto the head. The head still had the beak, eyes, crown, and little pieces of feather still on it. I ate the crown and decided that it wasn't that bad so I ripped open the skull and found what looked like the brain and decided to just go for it. I mean how many opportunities do you get to eat a chicken brain? It was pretty gross, mushy and kind of creamy which is not really something that I enjoyed eating. There really wasn't any meat in the head so I was just picking it apart, pretending to actually be eating something when I found an eyeball. It didn't really feel or look real to me so I decided to try it out. The second that I started chewing it, I realized that I had made a bad decision and it was probably one of the sickest things I've ever eaten. I really thought that I wasn't going to be able to keep it down, but it stayed in my stomach.
